My Poker Journey

My dawn of poker

I have been playing poker since I can remember, but it all probably began when i were visiting my grandmother and grandfather as a young child. We used to play a home game with their spare coins.

As a young man i made some small deposits. In the start i ran good and were playing NLHE $25, thinking i would soon be a millionaire. I then ordered a hoard of poker literature.

When i was in Gymnasium i played a bit for fun without any knowledge about what i was doing. I had a class mate that made a nice living just from the rakeback he received playing NLHE $50. Without the knowledge of what bankroll management was I had to make some small deposits once in a while.

Hitting rock bottom...

I then decided to go to Denmark and my poker where put on hold for a long time due to school, and later full time work. The unfortunate and sudden loss of my job led to a mild depression.

I always had a dream of being a professional poker player, and in the back of my mind I was thinking of my friend making a decent living grinding NLHE $50. I made a plan where I was going to play NLHE $50 and signed up for a rakeback deal and then started to grind.

I played on iPoker and a bit on PartyPoker, but my main focus were making enough through rakeback to make a living.

Since I had no clue what bankroll management was, I was sure that I played underrolled and when variance showed its true face, I busted. Since I was unemployed I had been putting myself in a very bad situation and I promised my girlfriend that I never would make another deposit, ever.

Climbing back up!

Since poker was my hobby I started to Google about poker, determined to start playing again no matter if it was play money or for real. I came across a site that gave away $50 for free, so with nothing to lose I signed up. This affiliate provided learning material in change for the rake that I paid.

It took some time getting my money and suddenly I found that I had only $14 left on one of the sites. I decided to start playing $1 SNG's and soon learned that I had around $60 in poker money and had learnt an easy strategy for playing with a long term edge.

The first problems started to appear when I was steadily moving up to $10 SNG's. I moved up and down between $5 and $10 SNG's until I one day had a good run and won a $6 Super Turbo MTT for $1600. This gave me enough money to start grinding NLHE $50, something I knew I could beat.

Discovering the game of Pot Limit Omaha

I played SNG's up to $50 and tried some PLO, but my main game was NLHE at the time, where I moved steadily up to $200 playing exclusively 6-max.

It was first when I tried to move up to NLHE $400 that I encountered some problems, but I managed to win enough to afford playing both $600 and $1000 as long as the big fish were playing. Although I couldn't manage to be good enough to beat the regulars.

This is when I decided to learn more about PLO and after a month I was convinced to stick with this game type, realizing that you could play more exciting hands in a shorter period of time. I started playing PLO $200 straight away and felt like I was home. Having tons of hands from my NLHE adventure I tried moving up to $400, but was forced to move down once or twice.

The horror of 2010 and the glory of 2011

In 2010 I was struck by incredibly bad luck when signing on a site that went broke, which resulted in me losing 70% of all the money that I owned. It was a though time since I had decided to play full time earlier during that year.

In 2011 I had my big break as a poker player where I decided to play more heads-up. In January the highest I played was $200. Then in February me and my girlfriend decided to move to our new house, which put pressure on my game to afford our loan. Luckily it went good when playing $400 and since that moment I only advanced in stakes. I ended the year with playing 15 times higher then I did during the start of the year. Since I have lot to prove in my poker knowledge, I look brightly to my future as a Professional Poker Player and am excited to take on the high stakes scene, online.
